Need help with USB on an iMac 333

Ive got an iMac 333 (slot-loading cd) with OS 8.6 that somehow disables
USB during startup.
I can boot the computer with the keyboard power key, and during the
first 30 seconds or so of bootup I can move the cursor around with the
mouse, but then about half way through the bootup process the mouse and
keyboard both stop responding.
I've tried other keyboards/mice as well as plugging them into different
ports and it does the same thing.
I've also tried holding shift to disable extensions. It recognizes the
shift and displays the words "Extensions off" but the mouse and
keyboard still dont work after bootup is complete.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Chris

Unfortunitly the computer did not come with any install discs (I bought
it used a few years ago). Would obtaining some help?

Hint: buy a 9.1 or 9.2.x installer CD on ebay.

You'll end up with a much more stable system -
unless there is some hardware issue of course.

I recommend Macs to my friends, and Windows machines
to those whom I don't mind billing by the hour

It's not. 7.5.x is the newest OS available for free.

Can you borrow another keyboard and mouse to try?
