My Canon printer just died. It was only a couple of years old, so I'm
not very happy with Canon right now - I had nothing but trouble with
this printer.
I just need a simple ink jet for basic printing. I use color often
enough that I don't want to go with a laser, and I don't have space for
more than one printer. I don't want to spend a lot, since I'm mostly
printing draft copies. I was always happy with Epson before this, so
I'll probably go with an Epson again. (I've considered HP, but their
ink is so expensive!)
My problem is that all the current Epson ink jets require X, according
to the specs. I have X on my main computer, but I sometimes boot from
9, and I have an older iBook that will only run 9. I don't want to be
limited to only being able to print from X. Sometimes I need to print
directly from my iBook when my main computer is not running. I found
an old Epson model on MacZone that's compatible with 9, but even though
the web site said it was in stock, they emailed me this morning saying
that it's back ordered, and I'm afraid that I'll never get it since
it's no longer being made.
Do the new printers really require X, or can you configure them in X
and then use them in both 9 and X? If the new Epsons can only be used
in X, does anyone have any suggestions for printers that are compatible
with 9?

What is wrong with getting an HP OfficeJet, those will work with OS9
with drivers from their web page?

Are you sure they'll work? I checked out the Officejet 4315 and 5610,
and both of them are listed as compatible with X only. The only
drivers listed on their web page are for X only.
There may be other Officejet models that work with OS 9, I picked these
two because they're available at a local store. But I only found one
HP model that's listed as OS 9 compatible, and it's not really what I'm
looking for, although I guess it would work. (It's a combination fax,
scanner and printer - I'd rather just have a printer.)

That is what I have an all in one, I us it under both os 9.2 and 10.3.9
and it seems to work fine, my old iBook will not run osx very good, but
in the next week or so it is getting replaced. You may have to look in
their archives. I have had HP printers for years; starting on my //e,
an old DeskJet 500 with both serial and parallel ports. It also still
works on an old LC Mac I have.

sorry to hear about your printer
I've used a Samsung ML 6060S and a Lexmark E310 with OS 9, then OS X,
worked fine for me (both laser) Didn't have much luck with the Epson
740's, thought, but that's probably just me.. I think the Samsung is
also networkable, if that helps
good luck with that
