Hi, I just bought a UMAX Apus 3000 (C600 in the US) [603e@240Mhz/80mb
ram] on ebay, and I had a couple of questions:

1. do these machines normally come with an Ethernet port? can I connect
it to my router and expect it to be able to share the Internet
connection with my PCs? If it does - is it a normal Ethernet port like
on a PC?

2. Can I use a PS/2 keyboard & mouse with it, or do i need ADB
versions?

3. Which mac os version is the best suited for it? I can download 7.5.5
from apple's site & I think I can get a mac os 8 cd that came with
another computer (performa 5260 I think).

4. speaking of the performa 5260, it is only a bit older then the Umax
- and uses a 603e as well. Can I cannibalize something from it and put
it in the UMAX? Do they use the same memory? I know the hard drive in
the performa is useless, since it's an IDE HDD and the UMAX has a SCSI
one.

Thanks in advance,
Ido Yehieli.

If I recall, you need to use a PCI based Ethernet card for 10/100 Ethernet.
You can probably find one very cheaply. MAKE SURE that any card you buy has
drivers for the Mac, otherwise it will be useless.

ADB is your only option. I've seen brand new Supermac keyboards selling on
ebay for $5, and have bought a couple myself.

For free, you can try 7.5.5 (though I can't recall if perhaps you needed 7.6
for the SuperMacs). OS 8.x would be better, either 8.1 or 8.6. I _think_ the
c600 can run up to 9.1, but could be wrong about this.

I don't know about the c600, but I've been running 9.1 on a UMAX S900
for years flawlessly. It's rock-solid stable.

OK, I guess I'll just use the performa's keyboard & mouse, not like the
computer's worth anything. it was actually cheaper to buy it including
mouse/keyboard/joystick/printer/some software disks then to buy an ADB
keyboard & mouse by themselves....

I believe it comes with OS 8.5 preinstalled, but it might contain a lot
of junk and I would like to do a clean install of the system. Can I
somehow do it if I only have the system installed on the hard drive but
don't have the CD?

Excuse the newb questions, but I am more of a PC person. The last (and
only) mac I've ever had before my recent ebay purchases was a "classic
II" with a 9" b&w screen from '91 or '92...
