OS X prints faintly

when i print out anything when i'm using os X 10.3.9 it comes out very
very faint. this is true for netscape, safari, a pdf, something in
word, photshop, etc.
if am back using system 9 and print anything, it comes out clear &
sharp - netscape, quark, filemakerpro.
any suggestions to remedy this?

Is printing set for "Economode" (Print-PaperType/Quality-PrintOptions)?

Or whatever other similar wording is appropriate for his printer, the
make and model of which he really ought to share with us.

thank you thank you!
it was set for econmode, i certainly don't remember ever changing it to
that, but i unclicked it, and it prints fine now!
