Hi all...

Staff member brought in a G4/400 for me to update to 10.4 and put some
RAM in (it was running 10.2.8 before this...)

Machine is *only* giving me a 640x480 resolution in the Display's
system preference.  And I'm pretty sure it was like this under 10.2.8,
but I started updating it without really thinking about it.

I hit the "reset" button on the logic board and reset the PRAM a number
of times.  And, yes, I updated the firmware on the CPU -- no help.

But no luck.  Still 640x480 -- even in OS 9.2.2 (which is odd as it
*ought* to work there if nothing else...)

Google isn't giving me any luck when I try to discover what might be
options.  Anybody have any clue here?

I'm sure it's some video card/driver issue, but I've pushed the machine
to 10.4.6 and it's still exactly the same.

I had that problem with a bent pin on my monitor cable.  Straightened it
out and I got all of my resolutions.  That'd definitely be something to
check.

I agree, it sounds like a sense line problem, the Mac thinks that it is
connected to a monitor that can only support 640x480, try a different
monitor, or if you have a monitor adaptor plugged in (D15 to HD15) then
check it's switch settings, if it is an unswitched one then bin it and
get one with switches.

So...

Not sure how this "fixed" it, but...

I plugged my older Apple LCD monitor into the ADC port (DVI?  Who can
remember the acronyms...)

Anyway -- *that* worked.  I had all the resolutions.

So, I shut down again, plugged the CRT back in -- same monitor -- same
cable (no bent pins) and restarted again.

Magically, all the resolutions were there for the CRT.  And I *had*
plugged and replugged the VGA monitor in dozens of times...

Go figure.
