Apple USB modem causes iMac core duo kernel panic.
This is a problem that I called Apple tech support about shortly after I
bought my iMac 20" core duo. This is the second Apple USB modem that I
have bought and both of them cause the same problems. The Apple USB
external modem always causes a kernel panic when attempting to dial out.
I can plug in the modem before power up or after and this always
happens. Whenever the external USB modem is plugged in, the system will
have unpredictable freezes and lock ups and always causes a kernel panic
when attempting to dial out. I hear no dial tone as the problem occurs
before dial out gets started. Apple - please address this issue in a
software update or make it possible for dialup users to get new hardware
( a replacement computer rather than having to bring the unit in for a
hardware fix) that has this problem fixed. I had to buy Airport Extreme
just to get online with a v.90 modem (the USB modem is v.92 with fax.)
It is despicable that Apple is dissing dialup users and hasn't yet
addressed this issue which is all over Apple support pages and
newsgroups. Why force dedicated Mac users to use an older Mac or a PC
because you don't support dialup and fax on the new intel models?

I noticed a mixed reaction to this modem when browsing the apple site
feedback section - some thought it great, others had similar probs to that
you have.
Not sure what the solution is - but am wondering if there is a 3rd party
equiv available - can you post any solution you find here? Would be much
apreciated\\

The only 3rd party solution I know of, Best Data, had an external USB
modem that was supposed to work on Mac - but it must be the older Macs
and older OS versions. It would not work on intel Mac. The modem
didn't cause a kernel panic but the software wouldn't work on 10.4.5 on
an intel Mac.
