Hi from Spain,
I recently got an Imac 233 (just the first iMac with egg form!!) and
its internal cd drive was broken. It just don't read!!!. I need to
change it, because I want to boot from CD (Ubuntu installation) and I
can't.
Can you explain me if a normal CD drive from a PC could be used for the
iMac??
I've an external USB drive but from it is impossible boot anything, or
not??
Sorry for my english...
mail me at perezcano AT terra DOT es
Thanks

Hi,
Unfortunately the pre-firewire imacs cannot boot USB. When Apple went to
the slot loader imacs they came with firewire and those can be booted with a
firewire external drive.
Although the hard drive on these bondi-blue imacs uses the standard IDE
40 pin interface the trayloading CD-ROM is a proprietory variety. I've
bought them here in the U.S. a couple of years ago for $60. You may be able
to scavange one by going to an Apple or looking through some classified ads.
It's rather important to have the CD-drive working to use this machine
unfortunately.
