i have a Prime Film 1800i which is about as cheap as you can get for a
film scanner. 35mm only. i'm using a B & W G3 and OS X 10.4.4 and all
seems to work ok. it can produce an ok result depending on the negative
(or slide) and i've had mixed results. don't have photoshop, plan on
using GIMP instead but i can't comment on how well it integrates with
those programs.
it's USB but it is not bus powered, it has a separate power supply.
i have a significant investment in Pentax 35mm cameras and lenses so i
thought i would straddle the film/digital divide and shoot film and
digitize the results and burn to disc.
i suppose, in time, i'll go all digital, but not yet.
i don't know if that model is still made but here's an amazon.com link
to a similar one (1800U)
look around, they can be had for about 80-90 USD.
good luck.
