Hi,

Are there any third party burners fully compatible with OS X 10.3.8?  I
have a Samsung burner that works well with Patchburn, but I get
occasional errors when burning, or trying to view a disc with DVD Player
that was finalized on another dvd recorder.  Is native support not there
for OS X or what?

TIA,
James

I can't say about 10.3.8, but I recently repalced the drive in my
PowerMac G4 with a Plextor PX-716A.  I'm running Mac OS 10.4.4.

Patchburn was unnecessary.  The drive shows up in the System Profiler,
saying that disc burning is available, but unsupported.  I have
successfully burned data CDs from Toast, audio CDs from iTunes, and
video DVDs from Toasat without problem.  I have yet to try iDVD.

That's very interesting.  Thanks.

Now that I'm sitting in front of that computer, here's what the System
Profiler reports about the drive:

    PLEXTOR DVDR   PX-716A:

     Firmware Revision:        1.09
     Interconnect:            ATAPI
     Burn Support:            Yes (Unsupported)
     Profile Path:            None
     Cache:            8192 KB
     Reads DVD:            Yes
     CD-Write:            -R, -RW
     DVD-Write:            -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
     Burn Underrun Protection CD:    Yes
     Burn Underrun Protection DVD:    Yes
     Write Strategies:        CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
     Media:            No

The only thing missing here is support for "-R DL", which Plextor says
is supported.  I suspect its absence from the System Profiler's listing
means that Apple doesn't yet have the support in their disc burning
code.

I think Toast is able to get around the "unsupported" issue.  I replaced
the combo drive in my Mini with a Pioneer drive and it show up as
"supported" in 10.4.4.  It supposedly does +/- R DL, but system profile
only says +R:

PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-K05:

 Firmware Revision:    1.03
 Interconnect:    ATAPI
Burn Support:    Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported) Cache:    2000 KB
 Reads DVD:    Yes
 CD-Write:    -R, -RW
 DVD-Write:    -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
 Burn Underrun Protection CD:    Yes
 Burn Underrun Protection DVD:    Yes
 Write Strategies:    CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO Media:    No

For towers... I prefer the DVR (pioneer drives). The DVR-110 (supports
DVD-RAM too) and the DVR-110D both are excellent. You won't get the
dual layer support except with the latest version of toast.

For portables... the Panasonic UJ811 works great as well.

Depending on your current drive, the errors could be due to an internal
mechanical issue.

I know that our company (http://Daystar-Store.com) carries all of these
and more.

I bought a Pioneer DVR-110D for around $50 to replace the old original
SuperDrive in my G4 iMac.  It works fine; it'll even boot the machine.
I'm using 10.4 now, but I don't think it matters in this instance.

I'd try different media before giving up on the burner.  What brand are
you using?

I strongly recommend mail-ordering some Taiyo-Yuden DVD-R discs;
they've been far more reliable than anything else I've tried, both in
my burners and on my home DVD player.

I got my last batch here:

These guys are also very competitive:

I use FujiFilm DVD-RW in my DVD recorder.  Sometimes it works, after
finalizing, on the G4, sometimes not.  I prolly need to buy a better
quality disk.  I use Memorex DVD-R disks on the G4.  No problems there.
I also use Verbatim DVD+R DL disks on the G4.  I get an error using
Toast on the DL disks after burning but they play just fine.
