I have an external plexwriter that I know is supported by osx. If I
stick a cd in there it can read it fine, and if I insert a blank cd
it will ask me what I want to do with it.
Howevver if ever I try to burn a disc image or anything else for that
matter, osx tells me that it can't find a burner. The only way I've
been able to select it as a burner is using that program firestarter
FX, but that only burns iso files. (i tried to convert them, but it
didn't work. I think firestarter lets me chose the plextor as a
burner, but it doesn't actually burn anything)
My internal is broken (on my iMac - 17' G4) so I have to use this
external. Please help, I really need it

Thank you very much for the help. It didn't work but it got me on
the right track. On the xlr8 website I found an update of thier
listing where they said my burner was compatible, but with a
"required edited plextor plugin file"
Where can I find this file? Is this a part of a program they offer
to download? thank you so much for your help

You can turn a folder (and subfolders) into a .iso file using "mkisofs".
It's free but complicated -- it runs from the command line and there are
dozens of options. When you get a set of options that does what you want,
save that command as a shell script.
I use it on Linux, where my DVD burner resides.
