To start of with, some background:
I have a G4 mirror drive door 1.25GHz dual processor system. Some time
ago, the fan on the video card started making noise; the bearings are
shot. Not just noisy, but the fan itself wobbles and the noise is when
it hits the side of the shield. After the system has warmed up, though,
the noise goes away.
Also, the system tends to lock up. Sometimes just the graphics,
sometimes the whole machine. I had attributed this to the accumulated
cruft through the various crashes and upgrades since OS X 10.1. Also,
there's a problem where if the machine crashes, I have to restore
/private from backup, or the netinfo database doesn't work.
Today, the machine froze up. No matter what system I booted (there
is one system, 10.4.2, on the main disk, and two partitions with 10.3.9
and 10.4 on another disk), it would boot to a blue screen with pointer
and go no further. After a period of time, the screen blanks, and a
wiggle of the mouse brings it back.
I disconnected all the drives except one that had no OS on it, and did
an install of 10.4.1 on it. Does the same thing. Funny thing is, the
installer disk will get to usable graphics, but not any installed OS.
I did a power cycle, booted the install CD, and used Terminal to look
at the system log. The last two entries are:
localhost kernel[0]: Graphics chip error! Restarted.
So, I'm assuming at this point that the problem is with the graphics
card. (GeForce4 Ti 4600 according to System Profiler.) I would like
to get recommendations for a replacement graphics card that I can go
down to the local Fry's and pick up, that would work in my system.
Thanks,
Steve

Usually PC graphics cards won't work in a Mac without special firmware,
so there my not be much at Fry's, but there is a new Radeon that should
work in both a PC or Mac that might be there.
ATI’s Radeon® 9600 PRO PC & Mac® Edition
<http://www.ati.com/products/Radeon9600/Radeon9600propcmac/index.html>
It only has DVI, not ADC interfaces, so you may need a display adapter.
It does include a DVI to VGA adapter.
I haven't tried this but am thinking of upgrading the GeForce2MX
TwinView in my Quicksilver with this card, so would welcome any
reports, good or bad on it.

Fry's does have a section with Mac video cards, but they didn't have what
I wanted.

I ended up going with the Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB card. It does seem to be
a bit faster than the old Nvidia 4600 Ti, but I can't close the machine
cover fully because the fan on the video card hits the CDROM drive cage...

Answering my own question...
After doing a bunch more research, I found that the best card is a
Radeon X800XT, but that one is AGP X8 only (the pc version does X4
as well as X8), and the G4 is X4 max. So I settled for a Radeon
9800 Pro 256MB, which looks to be a tad faster then the Ti 4600.
I didn't specifically look for Nvidia cards for Mac; the searches
I put into Google for "Mac G4 AGP X4 video card" all returned ATI
results, so that's what I went with.
If I could have done better, please let me know. It's not too late
to cancel my order, as it won't be processed until Monday.

Does the 9800 Pro support Core Image and Core Video? I couldn't find
it mentioned on their web page. The 9600 PRO PC & Mac Edition does say
it supports Core Image and Core Video. Apple's web sight says that
9600 XT, 9800 XT and X800XT support Core Image and Core Video, but they
do not mention the "Pro" cards. Apple is moving more graphics function
from the CPU to the graphics card, so Core Image and Core Video support
can be important. e.g. QuickTime Player requires Core Video support in
the graphics card to allow video adjustments during playback.

It's hard to find whether the 9800 Pro supports Core Image, etc.
However, one of Apple's pages said that a 867+ MHz G4 with a 9800 Pro
would be able to run Motion 2, and the Final Cut Studio Updates page
mentions Core Image Units as a system requirement and lists the 9800
Pro as being highly recommended.
A Mac Forum on chaosmint.com also lists the 9800 Pro as supporting Core
Image. Also on that page is a quote that says that any video card that
includes pixel-level programming supports Core Image, which includes
the 6800, and should support every future video card.
On mac-forums.com:
<quote>
I found this on the Apple home page. It's the list of graphic cards compatible with CoreImage/CoreVideo...
Supported graphics cards:
ATI Radeon 9800 XT
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
ATI Radeon 9600 XT
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra
NVIDIA GeForceFX Go 5200
NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra
</quote>
I think it's safe to say it's supported.
Thanks,
~Steve
