I've got a second generation 10 Gb iPod. During the use of one of the
latest software updates, I glanced over at the screen, which said it
wanted or was able to be unplugged. I reached over and did so just as
the screen changed to 'don't unplug this iPod on pain of death' or
something.
Well, sure enough, it is dead.
When charged, it sounds like it is cycling through a boot sequence, you
can hear its little hard drive speeding up, hitting something that
elicits a 'touck' sound, then slowing down (how's this for cartalk-like
descriptive prose?!?).
Disk Utility SOMETIMES sees the little tyke, but mostly not, and can't
do anything with it when it does (like, reinitialize the thing)
Snortin' Norton Utilities does not nor does Disk Warrior.
I can't see my way into the casing, nor would i know what to do once
inside; and yes, i have tried the Vulcan death grip to reset it (toggle
lock, hold a couple of buttons), which in this case provokes a steaming
pile of diddlysquat.
So my dearest cognoscenti, illuminati, have you any ideas?
One option is to bring it to Montreal's new 'iPod Store' but seeing as
how Apple wanted $250 to change the battery direct through their
service department, I figure a third party joint wouldn't be cheap, nor
veer from the Apple policy not to fix things but to replace componentry
en-masse.

Try resting by holding down the Menu + Pause/Play buttons for about 10
seconds. (If and) When the Apple logo is displayed, hold down the Fast
Foward and Rewind buttons until "OK to Disconnect" is displayed. Then
connect your iPod to the computer.
