Does anyone know the physical size of the internal CD drive vs. the hard
drive in a mini?  I'm wondering if it would be possible to put 2 hard
drives in a mini and get rid of the optical drive.  They both use the
same ATA connector, right?  I'm sure you'd need to secure it somehow,
but it would be very cool to have 2 drives in there in a RAID.

I've never been inside one, but the Mini uses a 2.5" laptop hard drive,
so you'd be able to fit more than one in place of the optical drive, but
of course those drives need adapters to use standard ATA connectors.

You'd probably have a heat issue in there.

There's no room for another drive of any kind in the mini.  Just go outside
with a firewire drive and you'll be happy.
