I have recently acquired a 12" ibook g3 500 MHz. I loaded 10.3.8 and all
seems well except the ibook will not sleep when the lid is closed. The
apple logo on the back of the display stays lit and I can hear disk
activity. Any ideas on what could be causing the problem?

No clue about your problem.  What happens if you select Sleep in the
Apple Menu?

That and...

The usual suspects apply here: connected devices, speakable items &etc.
Does resetting the PMU fix things?  Are you sure the lid is closed and
properly telling the OS to sleep?  Does it sleep eventually?
