I'm having some trouble with a new mini iPod, and I must confess it is
starting to drive me barmy. It's a mini, iPod, running with iTunes 4.7
on a iMac running 10.3.4
iTunes runs ok, the iPod synchronises fine, and uploads tracks. And
that's where my trouble is, it seems to be uploading the tracks in full
CD quality format. 36 songs took up 1.56 Gb of space. That's fine, I
thought, I just need to change the output format of iTunes. Trouble is
I just can't seem to do this anywhere. I tried the burning tab of the
settings, set it to Mp3, but to no effect. Is it to do with the way I
Import songs into iTunes from CD, or is there an output setting
somewhere that I am missing.
All help is welcome, it is really starting to annoy me

You're importing AIFF files into iTunes, and those are copied as is onto
the iPod. You need to import into iTunes in MP3 or AAC format in the
first place.

Select Advanced->Convert Selection to AAC from the iTunes menu bar. The
converted selection will *not* replace the original so you will have to
remove it from the library or set the iPod's update mode to only update
specified songs or playlists.

The "Convert Selection to ____" menu command changes to whatever file
format you've chosen in the Importing preferences. If your Import
preferences are set to AIFF, the menu command will be "Convert Selection to
AIFF". If you want to convert songs to a different format, you must first
change the Importing preferences.

Thank you all for your help. My problem is solved, and I am just a
little embarrassed I didn't think of it myself
