Are the battery issues any better with the new iPODS? Is there any way
that if a battery goes bad to just buy a battery instead of sending in
the IPOD to service?
What should I look for when buying an iPOD?

Yes. OWC (http://www.macsales.com) has batteries for iPods for $25-40
that come with tools and instructions:

As for personal experience... my iPod is 2 years old. New, it gave me
about 8 hours of play time, and now I'm getting about 5. This is pretty
consistent with other people's experiences, and typical of Li battery
drain over that amount of time (regardless of use). YMMV.
This page is also pretty informative:

The battery issues have been better even with the old iPods for quite
some time.

The set of features/characteristics that meets your specific needs.

I think the breaking point for me as a fan came when George started talking
about the pivotal Episode 3 light-saber duel between Palpatine and C-3PO.
