Can't get LaserJet 6mp drivers to load properly under OS9. Please help

Hi.

I'm working on a system for somone I know who's running a salon
software package on their Mac.  The system is a Beige G3/300 MT,
running OS9.2.2.  LaserJet 6mp is communicating via AppleTalk over the
Localtalk cable.

If I use the LW8 driver, it works as a system printer, but their
software keeps giving an "Appletalk is not active" error, even though
it clearly is.

I downloaded the proper driver from HP and tried to install it, and
although the installer shows a big bunch of files being copied
somewhere, the only thing that shows up in the "HP LaserJet" folder is
the installer log.  There's supposed to be an HP Printer Utility and
some other stuff, but no dice.

I've tried the driver install 4 times -- same thing.

The software was fine on their old ImageWriter until it died, so I
suggested we replace it with a 6MP that a friend of mine's shop had
in.  It's not the printer -- it checks out fine.

I'm stumped, and he's about ready to take the printer back.

Any suggestions?  Any idea why the printer drivers aren't installing
right?

Thanks.

If the printer is working properly, why the worry about the HP drivers?
I've got the same printer talking to an 8600. The "selected" (meaning
bold outline on the desktop) is the generic Apple printer and it's
just fine.

Back to basics -- are you sure you selected HP Printer in the
chooser (I can't tell you how many times I've changed printers and
forgotten to reset in the Chooser).

Laserwriter 8 IS THEE driver for HP Laser Printers (and most other Laser
Printers for Mac).
What the HP installer installs is Printer fonts, a printer utility to
allow you to change the printer name, ip address, etc, and a Printer
Page description file that describes the printers special paper handling
attributes, such as envelope feeder,multi-purpose tray, bottom paper
tray, etc. It's not required to use the PPD file, as generic will do in
most cases.

If the printer is working using the laserwrter 8 driver (and I cannot
really tell from your message if it is or not) then it is working
properly.

Thanks.

It is working as a system printer, using the LW8 over localTalk.  I
have AT enabled and on.

I guess it boils down to their software being able to see the older
Epson inkjet, but not the LJ.  Software company isn't all that
interested in seeing this problem fixed, since they've moved on
several versions and are now on OSX.  When it was written, they
probably didn't think most smaller salons would be using laser
printers... in my head, it shouldn't matter, but for some reason, it
does.  App keeps saying that it can't print because AT isn't active,
and it clearly is.  Software company said maybe he should try printing
over ethernet, but that requires the additional expense of a
JetDirect....

My confusion on the HP drivers stems from the installation log that
says there should be several utilities and things in that LaserJet
folder, and the only thing I see is the installation log.

But when I use the Desktop Printer Utility, one of my options for
printer description is a LJ 6mp, so it must have installed something
somewhere.

At some point, this is all going to come back and bite me in the butt,
since I originally sold him the G3/300 MT as a replacement for the
dead Peforma, and if he ends up being forced into a Mac mini or
something, I'm probably going to have to buy the G3 back from him.  It
worked just fine with the inkjet... he could buy a new inkjet, but
they all want to use usb, and usb printing is almost a non-starter
using a pci usb card. Or at least it has been so far.

It may not be that expensive. I picked up a Farallon EtherMac iPrint
Adapter LT. It connects the ethernet jack on the computer to
the AppleTalk jack on the 6MP (I've got a 6MP also). It's a little
box about as big as a crayon box. I'm not sure Farallon is making
them anymore, but you may find one on ebay or something. The
retail price was about $15.

I looked into JetDirect also and thought the $300 or so was
outlandish.

I just looked on ebay and there's a bunch of the iPrint LT for $5.00
plus shipping.

Thanks!  I'll see if I can snag one... hopefully the software is happy
with that....

I'm using one with a G4/OS 9.2 and it works just fine. Besides, for
$5 it would be a great experiment. I'm tempted to go buy a spare
just in case...

Except that since I'm trying to get one now, they're going for $30 a
throw on ebay.

I just know that if I get one for $30, and it doesn't solve the
problem with this setup, and I try to resell it, THAT's when they'll
sell for $5 again....

Figures.
