I've got an older G4 that doesn't seem to like the DVD ...here's the
details.
I removed the DVD/Zip completely from the machine and everything is
fine, boots up great, etc. I put the DVD/Zip back into the box
and I'm unable to boot from the DVD (holding down the C while booting).
In fact the system hangs. Makes it really difficult to load any
software. It's running 9.2.1 right now and I really wanted to put
OSX on it.
Is this a symptom of the controller being bad? If so, what's a
good solution? If not, what else could be wrong?
thanks

As an addendum...when I put the DVD/Zip back into the box, I disconnected
the Zip drive. Let's not get into the Zip discussion, ok?

Hi Blanche, what happens if you insert the CD into the slot and then
choose it as the boot disk and restart ? Does it still hang ?

Can't do it. System hangs when a CD is loaded into the DVD. No way
to restart until the CD is removed.

i had a related problem, or maybe the same. replaced the cdrw which
came with my G4 gigabit ethernet computer with the pioneer dvr-106
which is supported by apple in this machine. without any disc in the
dvr-106, it won;t boot. even with the dvr set for master and the zip
set for anything. unplug the zip, and the system is fine.
so try unplugging the zip and see what happens.
i believe the controller can't handle both of these devices.

Truly poor design on Apple's part that both devices can't be
supported. But that's not an issue. I disconnected the Zip as
soon as I got the machine.
I'm not sure that replacing the DVD will solve the problem. I
really don't want to go buy one, install it and find out that
the problem is something else and the solution is more expensive
than the box is G4 is worth.
