i need to wipe out my hard drive and was wondering if i will lose all
of my music on my ipod or does the ipod back it up or if i will lose
all of the music is there anything i can do about it

There are tools that will let you upload your music from your iPod
to the Mac (or you should be able to copy it via the filesystem).
