Apple Wide SCSI card problem

I have a Beige g3 with an Apple 53c875 SCSI card for wide SCSI drives.
I have an Apple branded IBM drive in it that works great, but I am
trying to get it to recognise a Seagate Barracuda ST32550W, and Disk
Utility for os x 10.2.8 does not even see it.

Has anyone here worked with one of these drives and been able to get it
recognised so that it can be used?  I have downloaded the PDF's from
seagate to look at jumpter settings, and on the j5, I have jumpers on
pairs 1-2 and 5-6 for termination, and I have tried ID's 0, 1 and 4 with
no success.

Also, I found on Apple an article on updating the firmware of the card,
but said firmware has already been updated.

This may not help you at all, but it's something to think about. It
might not be the SCSI card that's the problem; it might be the HD.

Last year I got a second-hand Fujitsu hard disk from a pc guy. At first
I had a similar problem to yours. After some digging on the net, I found
a doc explaining that the hd could not be initialised under OS 9 (which
I use on that machine) but could be under OS X. So that's what I did.
After that, I put it in the 9.2.2 Mac and re-initialised--it has been
fine ever since.

Can you try / have you tried formatting yours under System 9?

cheers,

Henry

At the moment, that is not an option.  As to digging on the net, I have
done an extensive level of that, although I cannot say exhaustive.  But
I have been unable to find any info that specifically addresses this
model and macs together stating they do or do not work.  I do plan to
conduct further research as time permits.

Do you want to install the Seagate as a second drive or should it replace the
IBM drive? If it is the former you must not terminate the Seagte.

Right now, I am simply trying to get the Mac to recognize it.  When I
try it out, I have the IBM drive disconnected, so I should need the
termination.  And for the record, I have tried it both terminated and
unterminated, both without success.
