Need more USB ports

Hi there. I am brand new Mac user and don't know anything about it
and OS X except what I have learned in the last few days from
reading. I need one more USB port, the two on the machine are being
used. How is the best way to add one? A PCI card or a external one.
I like the idea of the internal card but do I need one that is for a
Mac or will any of them work? There is 10.1 in there now but am going
to upgrade. Also is there a list of scanners and printers that is
supported in 10.3 ?

I've got a powered Hub and I'm pretty happy with that.  It has the
advantage that I can place it where I like, so I essentially have
front accessible ports (for the things that get plugged in and removed
frequently) on a machine without any front accessible ports.

The only advantage I can think of for a PCI card would be if you're
already saturating the bandwidth of your existing USB controller.

Go out and get yourself a $10-15 device called a "Powered USB Hub" from
just about anyplace that's fluent in computer gear. They can be
daisy-chained to give you up to 128 USB ports...

Others have suggested a powered hub which will work to be sure.  But you
may be able to do it using the other available ports.  The Apple LCD
displays have USB ports on the back side.  The standard Apple keyboard
has two ports, the mouse can go into one and something else can be
plugged into the other one.  But the power from the keyboard is limited.
If you describe what you have and what you are trying to add we can tell
you better how to hook things up.

But yeah, the hub is a simple approach.

I think the best option is to get a powered hub, preferrably a 6-banger,
and one that supports the 2.0 USB protocol. Some devices take power from
the USB bus and you can get in trouble if the draw is too high.
