g3 start up

have
brought a G3 with no op system on it put the hard drive from my old
G3 into it and itjust starts up and shows me a file and a question
mark and then turns the monitor off could anyone shed any light on
this thanks :))

Hi, it appears that the OS on your HD is not being recognized by
hardware or vice-versa.

the file and question mark mean (sometimes, not always) that the startup
disc cannot find system folder, or the hardware doesn't know which
device it should start from.

I know I'm not being concrete, but my best advice would be to find
or obtain startup software, even the factory G3 CD-Rom if possible,
or a Version of Norton Utilities CD Rom ,(probably v6? ).

I would also try disconnecting any external devices not needed for the
moment, such asa zip drive, cd burner, etc. and then trying again.

I would try that first, just to make sure the system can boot into a
stable state.
