I’m looking to put together an external DVD-RW dual layer drive using
ADS Tech’s external housing.   Can any body recommend a good dual
layer dvd-rw drive to purchases that will work with a MAC?

Thanks,
BigMike

Lacie uses the NEC mechanism and uses bitsetting to make the burned
dual-layer disc a DVD-ROM.  This allows it to be mounted by the Finder.
Other models may leave the "book type" as DVD+D9 (or like that), and the
Finder doesn't understand how to mount that. (I think the Pioneer 108
also does this)

You might also check the Lacie clearance page, I bought an "older" NEC
2.4x dual-layer drive for $89 from there.

A happy Lacie customer.
