Dead NIC(s)

The onboard NIC in a friend's PowerMac recently went completely dead
-- leaving her with out Internet access. I added a PCI NIC to her
machine to get her back online. This solution worked fine for a few
weeks. Now THAT NIC has gone dead! The NIC's were connected directly
to a cable modem and nothing else. Does anybody have any ideas as to
what could be causing this -- or how to prevent it in the future? Any
input is appreciated.
Thanks.

Check the cable modem, check the power, check the cable, check the Mac. You
have a problem, probably power. It will almost certainly fry anything else
you attach.
