Hi,
I just recieved my brand new iPod mini, and I was not impressed by the
quality. I bought it from Dixons online, in the UK.
For a start, there was some glue on the click-wheel, very dificult to
remove, and it would leave some marks on the white click-wheel. Then, the
iPod would not connect to my PC using USB but only using firewire. On USB,
nothing happened (no charging, no detection)...I updated the firmware, did
multiple resets & restores, but no results. I do have USB 2.0 on my
computer, and I have several USB 2.0 devices that do connect properly. I
also tried on other computers.
The [Menu] button on the click-wheel would not work, although the wheel
itself did (even at the top), so no way to go back to previous menus etc.
However, I could do a Reset which does use the [Menu] button...
Finally, the iPod would not go to Diagnostic mode, it would only reset.
I hope I was just unlucky and the replacement will be much better quality...

Weird, I just got a mini ipod from PC world (part of Dixons). It too had
some sticky crap on the wheel.
I thought perhaps box had been opened?

Hi Tom
I've heard of the sticky crap issue too - on the click wheel.
Doesn't it just suck? Luckily my friends have been able to get it off.
Best Regards
