I have the same model imac, and I upgraded the ram to 640 via a 512
dimm and a 128 dimm, I have been running it this way for a year, plus
I upgraded the HD to 120GB and it has been a rocking system ever
since. My friend who is an authorized apple technician at my local
store says that it is no problem at all to up the ram to whatever you
can afford with 2 pc100 dimms.

I have the same Mac model and I have 768 MB (512 + 256). I may upgrade
to a gigabyte total, but it works fine for now.
