Hello. An easily answered question, I hope: I want to increase the size of a
row in my Excel 2003 spreadsheet, but when I place the cursor on the line
separating it from the row below it, it no longer changes to the shape
enabling me to drag the bottom line of the row to where I want it. Instead,
it persists in maintaining its (fat, white) cross shape. How can I get it to
abandon this cross shape? (And just for curiosity, what does the cross shape
mean?)
Thanks for your help.

I just didn't notice that, for the cursor to adopt the appropriate shape, one
must be in he far lefthand edge of the row, where the row numbers are. Sorry.

The open white cross is the normal "select a cell" cursor. To change the row
height (or column width) move the cursor to the edge of the sheet to the row
numbers or column names. The cursor should change shape and allow you to
change widths and heights. If not, the sheet may be protected, and will have
to be unprotected first.
