I recently upgraded to Office 2008. Running the latest version of Leopard. When ever I try to save an Excel file. I get the following message(s):

'Expenditures08,xls' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from you list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.

The I hit Save and get this message:

Document Saved successfully. Cannot reopen the saved document due to low memory. Please close the document.

I know I have enough memory...2gigs

PS...it is saving over a windows network

Sounds more like a network problem. Do you see the same thing when you
try to save locally?
Apples@officeformac.com - 25 Feb 2008 21:55 GMT
I did just save it locally and it worked fine...the problem is saving it to the network. Why would it be the network? I didn't have problems before upgrading to Office 2008. All applications I use, I save over to the network and no issues there. Also I have no issue with Word 2008 saving to the network...just Excel 2008

Thanks

I have exactly the same problem. Saving the same file to the same location on
the network using Excel 2004 works, Excel 2008 does not.

I have an idea of what may be the cause of this problem.

My computer is connected to the office network via Ethernet and Airport
simultaneously and I get error messages when I try to save the document.

After I unplugged the Ethernet cable and used Aiport only the problem
disappeared.

It's like Excel tries to locate the file using the "wrong" connection and
thus cannot find the file.

Excel 2004 did not have this problem.

Can anyone else try to verify if my hypothesis is correct?

I will keep i like this for

Good idea. Have you tried Ethernet only? I use Ethernet NOT Airport and have the issue.
Bo Boivie - 05 Mar 2008 16:01 GMT
Hello,

I tried Ethernet only and then it fails. Very strange.

There was a post today "Open and save .xls Format over the Network" where a
user has the same problem but says it only happens with ".xls" files and not
with the new ".xlsx" format.

I haven't tried with xlsx myself to see if it works. What kind of files are
you using?

Bo

BINGO....I think that's it. My files are .xls. Just did a SAVE AS of my file and saved it as a .xlsx. Made changes, saved it multiple times and no error messages.

Try it on your end and see if it works for you. Let me know :)
Bo Boivie - 07 Mar 2008 07:57 GMT
Yes, it works with the new format. Hope the guys at MS picks this up...

Great...hope it gets fixed soon
Enno@officeformac.com - 13 Mar 2008 09:29 GMT
The error was not recovered with the update 12.0.1. I cannot save
Excel files in the "xls" format in the network.

This error should be recovered as soon as possible, since operating with old files is very pedantic.
Apples@officeformac.com - 13 Mar 2008 16:08 GMT
Come on Microsoft...this is inexcusable

Enno@officeformac.com, Apples@officeformac.com and Bo,

Will you help be a part of the solution by sending us these three things:

1. A copy of your System Profile.
2. The OS version the server is using.
3. The version of Excel that the .xls files were created in?

You can send them directly to me. If anyone else reading this post is
experiencing the same problem please send me the same information.

Thanks,

Yep same problem too, had no problem with 2004, files are stored on a
server running Server 2003, .xls files in the shared folder have been
amended by all levels of Excel 2003, XP & 2000.
Tom M. - 29 Mar 2008 01:15 GMT
Yup, I'm seeing this problem too.  Word seems okay.  Limited to Excel 2008.
Server is Windows 2000 Std.
Same problem saving to a share on a Windows 2003 Std Server also.
Excel 12.0.1

Thx.
Tom

I have Test all Format ".xls" all version ,".csv" and ".xlsx" it's only the ".xls" Format this problem has. All other formats can be saved in network without problems.

But in my company we have very many files in ".xls" format, and we have to convert neither the time nor the desire everything.

I hope this error is recovered by the next update.
Kalle Flodkvist - 20 Mar 2008 08:33 GMT
I have the same problem, too. But I think I have found something.
When I mount the network device via smb (smb://fileserver/share) i have the problem. But, when I use afp (afp://fileserver/share) everything is fine.
chrome262 - 02 Apr 2008 16:14 GMT
Same issue on the network. One thing i did find is that when you save an xlxs version and then open up the xl file, the problem seems to resolve its self. Also, i find that when i do get the issue and close, and then reopen it still saves but shows the error. Kind of frustrating, because everyone else in the office is using older version so i have to use .xl files if they want to read my data. Everything else is good except it doesnt search as well or as easy on Excell as it does on 2007 for PC
tbyrne - 06 May 2008 18:26 GMT
Same problem here Excel 2008 12.0.1 on OSX 10.5.2, sharing many .xls
files on a Windows SMB network to a samba server. Can't use the new
format as we have to share too many docs with outside users without
2007-08.

No errors when saving locally.

Would really like to see this fixed, please.

Cheers,

TB

Hello everybody

The SP1 for 2008 recovers this error.

I can save all formats over the network.

Thanks

Enno
