Excel 2008 crash on maximize window

Si_Plant@officeformac.com - 21 Feb 2008 17:49 GMT When opening an existing excel spreadsheet, which is then maximized using the mac green window button, Excel crashes, taking with it all control of OS X. I cannot tab between windows, cannot force quit of the hung excel app, cannot regain control and does not time out and return. The only solution appears a hard restart via the power key. The Excel spreadsheets generally recover OK. This has happened probably 10 times in the last week.
Is anyone else seeing this problem. Is a fix available

Is a fix available I am experiencing the exact same problem, but can offer no solution. Hopefully Microsoft is aware of this and will fix it with the first update. I often switch to Parallels just to have a usable version of Excel.
manducasexta@gmail.com - 06 Mar 2008 02:01 GMT I'm having the same problem too. This person
http://groups.google.com/group/blacktree-quicksilver/browse_thread/thread/6710da 4dd33965d7/6fadafdef5ddd742
thinks there might be a compatibility prob w quicksilver. Are either/ both of you running quicksilver?
I've had about 8 hard crashes in the past 5 days, with the only remedy being holding the power key down until the computer powers off. Macbook Pro, 10.5.2. QS beta 54. I don't want to start Office 2008 up to tell you what, if any, updates I've installed on it, because I don't want to crash again. Grr!

Sorry I don't have any answers for you all, but hoping one more person chiming in might help. Typical it takes a Microsoft product to crash an apple.
Pat McMillan - 12 Mar 2008 02:51 GMT Hi,
We've been investigating many reports of this, but have yet to get to the bottom of it. Can you answer the following questions for me:
1. Do you have Parallels installed on this machine? 2. If so, is Parallels running when you encounter this problem? 3. Does this happen with any workbook, or just specific workbooks? 4. Does it happen with a blank workbook? 5. Does your machine use an Nvidia graphics card (like the GeForce 8600M GT)? 6. Have you installed the "Leopard Graphics Update" on your machine?
Thank you for any help you can provide. We really want to figure this problem out.
Thanks,
Pat

Hi Pat, I am having the same problem. Excel 2008 crashing the entire OS after expanding a window with the "+" button. 1) I do have Parallels installed 2) But Parallels is NOT running when Excel crashes 3) I cannot tell you if it happens with all or just some workbooks. It doesn't happen every time I hit the "+" button. It does seem to happen more often with some workbooks. I'm not sure, but I think it is more likely to happen with workbooks with lots of data in them. 4) I have NOT been able to get it to crash with a blank workbook. 5) Yes. I have a recent MacBook Pro 15 inch with a GeForce 8600M GT 6) Yes I have installed the Leopard Graphics upgrade. I installed the Office 2008 Update released this afternoon... but it didn't seem to have any impact on the Excel crashing RW
Pat McMillan - 12 Mar 2008 18:58 GMT Thank you so much. This information is really helpful. We think we're getting close to a repro case thanks to everyone's help. If anyone else can answer these questions it will help speed up the process.
Thanks again,
Pat

I am having the same Excel 08 crash when I maximize certain spreadsheets.
1. I have Parallels installed 2. I do not have Parallels running 3. I can replicate the problem consistently with one of these spreadsheet files - These files have either been created on a Windows machine or modified on a Windows machine 4. I have not been able to make this happen with a blank worksheet file 5. I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch with a GeForce 8600m GT 6. I just installed the Leopard graphic update and still have the problem
I am also having another problem, which may or may not be related. I have a fairly good sized workbook template that I have been using for years. In Excel 2008, I consistently get a circular reference error. All of the number calculate correctly and the same document opens with no circular reference errors in Excel 2004 and in Vista with Excel 2007. This worksheet also crashes when maximized, but not every time.
Thanks for your efforts,
Bob Ellis
Pat McMillan - 21 Mar 2008 05:05 GMT Thanks for your report, Bob. Actually, we've heard a few other reports of circular reference errors with certain files, but have not been able to get to the bottom of it yet. Unfortunately, the best way to do that is to actually look at a file that has the problem. I know that many files cannot be shared for privacy or confidentiality reasons, but if there's any way you could send me your file (any file that shows the problem) it would almost certainly give us what we need to identify and fix the problem. If that's possible, please send to patmcmil@microsoft.com. If that's not possible, please describe as best you can the contents and history of the file -- especially the structure of the formulas that show the circular reference error.
Thanks,
Pat

matt@stanford.id.au - 05 May 2008 00:53 GMT I have had the same issue: same spec as others (parallels installed, but not running, Quicksilver b53 installed, Excel doc created on a PC) - but the crash only occurs for me when maximising an Excel doc that's located on a shared (SMB) volume. If I copy the file to the desktop, no problems.
Please help!
Cheers Matt

Just wanted to add my two pennies.
I'm having the same problem. If you change window size manually (using the bottom right corner) everything is fine, but it's the maximise when you first open the file.
I do not have parallels installed and never had done, so you can rule that out.
I do have the leopard graphics update in, and that has caused direct problems with screen rendering on scrolling most noticeable in both firefox and safari (most up to date versions). Both mangle the screen contents on slow scroll - this happens every time, and started the moment the graphics update was done.
I can't remember the Excel problem happening before the graphics update, so they could be related.
I've got a MacBook Pro with GeForce 8600M GT.
I can't believe this is a Microsoft problem as nothing should be able to lock the whole machine. I get alternating beachball and pointer, but nothing but a hard power reset gets control back. I'd put my money on this being, unfortunately, an OS X screwup.
Best wishes
Peter

Edward Peppitt - 12 Mar 2008 23:40 GMT Hi I too am having this exact problem. It happens on many spreadsheets. I have to remember to maximise the screen by dragging the bottom right hand corner of the sheet, rather than use the green + symbol. I don't have Parallels installed. Ed

But I think you can use some recover tools if you need to recover some important spreadsheet. I knew one called Advanced Excel Repair. It is a powerful tool to repair corrupt or damaged Excel files.
Detailed information about Advanced Excel Repair can be found at http://www.datanumen.com/aer/
And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aer/aer.exe
Hope this will help.

CyberTaz - 16 Mar 2008 15:45 GMT As you've been advised previously you're hawking your product in an environment where it *can't* be used natively. If you ever develop a Macintosh version please let us know.
In the meanwhile you are falsely as well as knowingly directing people to a non-solution - a behavior which is both arrogant & deceptive.

I have recently made the switch to a mac. been on windows for ten years. (im actually a ms certified engineer and sell MS solutions) i just lost the will to live with pista and other incarnations on blotedows etc.
Anyway really liking osx and not had a problem till installing office 08. and having googled my problem came across this thread so i guessed id add my issues too.
1. im running a new 15" macbook pro (2 weeks old) Intel dual core ver. i do run parallels but it isnt running at the time.
2. when i click the green maximise button it hangs the OS, only way out is to hold the power button in.
3. when it does hang excel has maximised but shows the scroll bars in the old size and new, as if the screen hasn't redrawn properly.
4. it does it with all the spreadsheets i have. even a new one with no data in.
hope this helps and a solution is found soon.
Alex
Pat McMillan - 19 Mar 2008 19:38 GMT We are aware of this, and think it may be an Apple bug. Please see this thread: http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/Excel/822.
