Does this happen with every worksheet/workbook or just this one?
Are you working in Compatibility mode (i.e., a .xls file)?
Do you have hidden columns/rows?
Do you have comments or any other objects in the sheet?

That error message fires when there is an object (shape, chart, picture,
etc.) that has the "move and size with cells" object positioning property
set and it's anchored to a cell that would be pushed off the page if you do
your column insertion.
You may be able to figure out which object is preventing the insertion by
selecting an existing object on the sheet (or creating a new shape) and
using TAB to cycle through the objects on the sheet.

Hi - I'm having the same problem, and this doesn't seem to solve it. As far as I can tell, I don't have any "objects" - just numbers and text.
I have tried this in both compatibility mode and in xlsx mode - and this does not happen in all worksheets - just this one. (Although when I cut and paste all the data from here into a new worksheet the problem persists.)
Thanks for any help!

Hi - I am also having the same problem. Tried deleting all the columns and rows outside the affected area. Mine is just a simple text and numbers sheet nothing fancy.
Interesting the objects and shapes are grayed out as well. I have tried both modes (xls and xlsx) Even jammed the spreadsheet and would not click in a cell, had to reboot the computer. This issue has rendered Excel unusable not sure what to do now?
Any further ideas from the experts out there?
Many thanks...

First, was the sheet/workbook protected?
I have no idea what "Even jammed the spreadsheet" means, but are you
saying you couldn't even Quit, or Force Quit XL?
I'd try, with XL closed, deleting the
com.microsoft.Excel.plist
file in the
~:Library:Preferences
folder (where ~ is your home directory).

not that I know of

no

none.
I also tried removing the
com.microsoft.Excel.plist
file in the
~:Library:Preferences
no luck. very annoying. Guess i'll go back to Microsoft Office X
for now.
