are there any downloads available that will make spreadsheets I work on with
my laptop that has vista - compatible with my desktop that has XP?

You posted in a Macintosh newsgroup.

Your question is related to the Windows Vista and Windows XP operating
systems.

Compatibility of Excel files generally depends on the version of Excel, not
the operating system.

If you are using Excel 97-2003 on both the laptop and the desktop computers,
the Excel XLS files are compatible.

If you are using Excel 2007, you can choose Office Button | Save As | Excel
97-2003 Workbook to ensure compatibility.

Also, if you are using Office XP (2002) or Office 2003, you can download the
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for the Office 2007 file formats.

Vista & XP are simply different versions of the Windows Operating System.
User files are usable on either provided you have the appropriate program -
in this case Excel - installed on each of the computers. If the same version
of *Excel* is installed on each of the computers there is no need for any
kind of "compatibility" download.

OTOH, if you actually mean one system is running *Office* 2007 and the other
is running a different version of *Office* (such as 2003 or XP) there is a
difference in default file formats that has to be taken into consideration.
However, since this is a newsgroup for the Mac version of Excel it really
isn't the appropriate forum for this issue. Contact one of the Windows Excel
groups if you need more info:
