I have a G4 tower 1.25 Ghz Mac with 1.5MB ram running Mac OS 10.4  and
Office for Mac with all latest updates. In a 700kb Excel(v11.37)
spreadsheet the comments appear to randomly self delete or move to
other cells! delete a column and many cells resize, often to huge
sizes or extend off the page. Lately some cells refuse to let comments
be edited too. Can anyone help?

This sounds most like workbook corruption to me. Try copying the sheet
(using CMD-c) and pasting into a new workbook. Same result?
