Does the equation editor come with Office 2004 for Mac Student
Edition? I've followed the paths the help feature gave me, and it just
isn't there. When I go to the Microsoft website, it says that some
people might have to download it, but I can't find the download for
Mac, let alone Office 2004. What can I do to either get the Equation
Editor and/or enable it?

Assuming you're actually talking about Word, since there's no use for
formatted equations in Excel,
I strongly recommend getting used to using the Formula Field.  It's got
a vaguely LaTex - like syntax, and is far easier to edit than that darn
Equation Editor horror show.

Why wouldn't the Equation Editor be just as useful in XL as it is in
Word? In either case, the EE can produce formatted text objects that can
be used to illustrate human-readable equations.

Formula fields don't do anything like what the EE does.

I believe the EE comes with the S&T edition. It should be findable on
the install CD (in the Microsoft Office 2004:Office folder).

OTOH, you can also download a copy of MathType with more advanced
capabilities, even in the free version:

Hello there,

Office 2004 Student & Teacher Edition does come with Equation Editor,
it just depends on how you installed the software.
If you performed a custom installation it may not of installed it but
performing a drag and drop installation installs everything.

Here are the steps to get Equation Editor to appear.
1. Go into the hard drive/applications/Office 2004/ and drag the
Office folder to the trash
2. Place in the Office 2004 CD and open the folder that states Office
2004, in this folder you will see the Office folder, drag the Office
folder to replace the Office folder that you dragged to the trash
3. You may need to perform your updates again
4. Launch Microsoft Word and Equation Editor should be listed.

Thanks... practical advice on how to find a product we've already purchased
and obviously need. Cheers.
