My 'insert row' and 'insert column' command buttons on the toolbar are
in a lighter shade, and don't appear to be available.  I don't quite
understand why.  The 'delete row' and 'delete column' command buttons
are fine.  Any ideas as to why the 'insert row/column' buttons don't
work?

Also, does anyone know the control keys for insert/delete row/column?

thanks...

First some clarification - What version of Excel are you using? Always a
good thing to mention:-)

If 2003, Control+Click the button, select Properties, then click Reset.
(This is assuming you *have* added the buttons to a toolbar - they aren't
there by default.) Should that not work, go to Tools> Customize> Customize
Toolbars/Menus, drag the buttons off the toolbar & replace them with new
ones from the commands on the Commands page of that same dialog.

If you actually mean Menu commands (Insert>Row, Insert>Column) click the
black triangle at the end of a toolbar, select Customize Toolbars/Menus & go
to the Toolbars page. Click the *name* of the Menu Bar, then click Reset.

If these suggestions don't help post back with details.

Re. keyboard shortcuts: Neither command has a shortcut assigned to it, but
in the Customize dialog you can click Keyboard & assign them. Instructions
are in Excel Help. Search using the keywords: customize shortcuts.

When you customized your toolbar, you probably used the Insert buttons
from the Edit category in the Customize Toolbars/Menu dialog's Commands
pane rather than those from the Insert category.

The Edit category buttons apply to the List Manager. Unfortunately, the
icons are identical with the Insert category buttons.

You can assign anything you want via Tools/Customize Keyboard... There's
nothing assigned by default.

However, if you have an entire row/column selected, CTRL-i (which b
default is assigned to Insert/Cells...) will work.
