When trying to highlight cells using the "Pick Fill Color" on the
toolbar  - it's not highlighted and can't be selected. Does anyone
know how to change this so I can select a full range of colors from
the color palette?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, that selection is for objects, not cell fills. If an object
is selected when you choose this tool, the choice will be active.

Hi Bob and thanks for the reply. I guess I'm a bit confused as I'm
used to working on a pc. So on a mac, I cannot have a large selection
of fill colors for the cells in my spreadsheets? What qualifies as an
object?

Thanks again for your insight.

Pretty much anything that is not a cell. A line, circle, box, shape, etc.
Most anything created from the drawing tool bar. I think this is the same as
in PC Excel. They both have the same limit to maximum colors available.

Hi There! - I think you may have misunderstood the point Bob G. was trying
to make... It isn't that you can't fill cells with any color you want, you
just cant do it using the Pick Fill Color command (Eyedropper) in the Fill
Color button lists (Drawing, Formatting toolbars and the Borders & Shading
section of the Formatting Palette). You can, however, select any of the
colors displayed by the swatches in those lists... Just click the swatch.

The Eyedropper can only be used to fill a shape (object), not for adding
fill color to cells. To use it, select a drawn shape, choose the command,
then click on anything colored (including a filled cell) to fill the shape
with that same color. This feature isn't available in PC XL (as of 2003
anyway - not sure about '07).

But is there a way to change the default colors which are currently
available to fill the cells? The problem is that I have a large
selection of dark colors to choose from, and need lighter colors so
the black text can still be read. Can the colors that are currently
offered as a "default" selection be changed?

Thanks.

See the "Change or copy a color palette" topic in XL Help.

... Or just open one of the Fill Color button lists, select More Colors...,
and follow your nose:-)

Alternatively go to Excel>Preferences - Color.
