Opening a template on Microsoft Excel 2004 (Mac)

I'm trying to open a template that I downloaded from
office.microsoft.com on Microsoft Excel 2004 for Mac (Version
11.3.5).  I followed all of the instructions on
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Using-Windows-Templates.html and got the
step where File Juicer juiced the .cab and opened 4 files: inf, txt,
URLs,
and xls.  After opening all of the files, I think the one in the xls
folder was the actual document.  It is named 10115417.pub.xls.  Now
my problem is opening that file.  When I go to Excel and go to
File>Open
and find the file, I can see the preview of the document in the Open:
Microsoft Excel box but then when I actually click open, I get a
message saying "10115417.pub.xls: file format not valid."

I think I'm supposed to change the file extension but I'm not sure.
If changing the file extension means just changing the name, I tried
that and it doesn't work.  I know I'm really close to opening it but
am missing something!  Any suggestions?

I know nothing about File Juicer. I've always successfully used Stuffit
Expander, which produced an .xls file. Did you try that first, as the
web site you mentioned suggests?
