How do I keep Excel from coming up as a startup item when I start the
computer? I have tried the startup items routine and looked at other
options. But I'm not doing something right.

What is in your startup items? Even if Excel is not one of them, an Excel

Control(Right)-click the Excel icon in the Dock & select "Open at Login" to
remove the check. If that isn't it or the problem continues go into Apple
Menu> System Preferences for that user (an Admin account?) & remove Excel
from the list on the Login Items page.
