How to improve the look of legends

In bar or column charts, the legend shows too small a piece of the bar
pattern to easily distinguish one from the other. How can I make it show a
bigger bit of pattern?

The legend marker sizes are set by the font size of the legend entries -
the bigger the font, the bigger the marker.

One can get a bigger marker for a font size by increasing the font size,
then choosing sub or super-script, but that, IMHO, hardly improves the
look of the legend.

For a couple of clients, I've used a macro to create custom legends (by
lining up symbols and text boxes, then drawing a box around them), but
that can be a fairly complex process unless you're creating lots and
lots of similar charts.
