Formulas not automatically updating; Clicking into formula results in "0"

I recently purchased Excel for Mac and have been having a couple of
really odd issues that never happen on Excel when I use my PC
version.  Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

ISSUE 1 (occurs 10 times out of 10): Whenever I type a formula into a
cell (e.g., If the formula in B1 is "=A1+A2") and then change the
number in A1, the number I see in B1 will not update automatically
until I physically place my cursor into the formula text box in the
toolbar and click return.  This is seriously annoying because whenever
even a few numbers change, it takes 10+ clicks to update the bottom
line total, and I'm never really sure that the calculations are
correct. Is there some sort of setting that tells Excel to update the
formulas automatically?  I've never had to do this with the PC version
of Excel.

ISSUE 2 (occurs 2 times out of 10): Sometimes when I click into a cell
with a formula and then press the return key, the number changes to
whatever the correct calculation was to 0, even if 0 is not the
correct number.  For example, if cell B1 had a formula "=A1+A2" and
A1=2 and A2=3, when I place my cursor into the formula and then press
return, the number I see in B1 is 0.  Regardless of how many times I
press return, it remains at 0.  The number 0 will not go away, and I
actually have to delete the cell and re-type the formula in a new
cell.

Thank you very much!

Preferences/Calculate, click the Automatic radio button

This is very odd, as you've indicated. Does it still happen after you've
changed the Calculation setting?

When you say 2 times out of 10, is it random, or is there some sort of
pattern to which cells/formulas/?? show this problem?

When the cell shows 0, does the formula bar still show =A1+A2?

I went into the Calculation preferences, and "Automatic" was already
selected.  It still doesn't automatically update.  Any other
suggestions?

In terms of the second issue, it is totally random.  And yes, when the
cell displays 0, the formula still remains the same, say =A1+A2.  And,
when I click in the formula tab, it even highlights those two cells,
so it clearly knows which cells it should be pulling the numbers
from.

Hi JE,

Thanks so much for your help.  Unfortunately, when I went into the

OK, I'm amazed. Can you send me this workbook? I'd like to see this for
myself.
