I am trying to find out if I can change the color Excel uses to
indicate selected cells. It is currently set on a light blue that is
practically impossible to distinguish from unselected cells. Thanks for
the help in advance.

Go to your System Preferences, and choose "Appearance."  The setting in
question is not an Excel-level setting; Excel just uses the highlight
color specified in System Preferences for the "Highlight Color."

The highlight color is set by the operating system, not by
Excel. Assuming that you're using Mac OS X, go to System
Preferences / Appearance to change the highlight color.
