Excel X Freeze

I have a corrupt file which freezes Excel (X) and I force quit.  When I re-open
Excel by clicking a different file it opens that file but then it attempts to
open the corrupt file as well, requiring a force quit again.

Is there some way to prevent this behavior?  I have trashed the offending file
but it seems that there should be a better solution.

Thanks

XL's trying to open the AutoRecover version. To bypass this, start XL
with the shift key down, then close XL to delete any AutoRecover files.

Many thanks.  I must have missed that in the 'help' files.
