I'll assume that, since it "works fine" when you start XL, that you
saved your template *as a template* with the name "Workbook" (no quotes)
in the startup folder.
If that's right, XL should open with a workbook titled "Workbook1".
I'm not sure what cmd-Save means - are you referring to the cmd-S
keyboard shortcut?
However, if it's overwriting the template, and not giving you the option
to choose a filename, I suspect you saved the template as a workbook,
not a template. In that case, XL should open the workbook on startup
with the name "Workbook", rather than a copy named "Workbook1".
That would also explain why cmd-N produces the default default template.

I thought I had done exactly as you said, but I went back and did it
again. Problem solved! Thanks very much. (Maybe on my original pass I
saved as a template with the .xlt extension, then deleted it in the
Finder later. This time I saved as a template, but trimmed the .xlt
before finalizing the save.) Anyway, thanks very much!
