Hi Buddy,

I cannot set Excel 2004 as default application for xlt files. If I
hightlight one xlt file and click Get Info, Excel 2004 is gray out in the
application list. However, other Office 2004 applications can be selected.

I have no idea why this helps. Is there any limitation on this, or is this
behavior is by design?

I am looking forward to your answer. Thanks for your input!!!

Sincerely,
Terry L

I can set .xlt files to a variety of apps, including XL04.

Do you have Write privileges?

Try repairing disk permissions (using the Disk Utility app in
Applications:Utilities, or another app such as Onyx).

That won't help if the file is in Documents, on your Desktop or anywhere
else in your user folder: "Repair Disk Permissions" does not touch any files
in your user folder. Instead, do a Get Info on  the file (select it, then
cmd-I or right-click and choose Get Info). At the bottom check that you can
Read & Write - or fix it. If you are not listed as Owner, you'll first have
to click the triangle, then the lock, then change the owner to you (you user
name), then Read & Write. You need to have an admin password to change
owner. Sometimes files that have been brought over from another user on you
computer are owned by that someone else.

First, I make sure that I am the owner of the xlt file, and I do have the
Read & Write permission.

Next, I copy the xlt file to another Disk. So I have one on my Desktop, the
other on the Data disk.

Third, I repaired Disk Permissions to check whether it helps.

Unfortunately, I still cannot directly link the xlt file to Excel 04.
However, if I rename the file extension to xls, it is recognized by Excel 04
instantly.

If I launch Excel 2004 to open the xlt file, it can be read properly.
Another interesting thing: In the Get Info Window, when I try to set
application to open, the Microsoft Excel is still gray out. Therefore, I am
unable to choose it..

I have checked this behavior on several Macs: 2 ibooks (Tiger), 2PMs
(Tiger), 1iMac (Tiger). All of them have the same issue.

Any further suggestion? I truly appreciate.
