AutoRecover for Excel Not Working

I am using Office X for Mac, SR 1.  AutoRecovery is turned on in both
Word and Excel.

AutoRecovery works for Word but not Excel.

I find that the AutoRcover saved Word document is in the Microsoft User
Data Folder within User/Documents/.  It is updated at the chosen
frequency.

On the otherhand, no Excel AutoRecovery document is saved, even though
I can see the AutoRecovery save happening for the open workbook.  No
AutoRecover saved Excel document is placed in the Microsoft User Data
Folder!

I've re-installed the application and installed all Office updates.
AutoRecover did work for Excel a long time ago, probably when I was
using an earlier version of OS X.  I am currently using OS 10.3.9, but
AutoRecovery shut off many OS versions ago.

I wouild appreciate any ideas on how to fix this problem.  No matter
how often I manually save as I work in Excel, I have lost many minutes
of work without AutoRecovery.

AutoRecovery is elegant, but I miss AutoSave!

Are you sure its not being saved?

The XL autorecover document is a hidden file.

In the Terminal, I see my AR files that have filenames of the form

   ~arXXX

where XXX is a three or more digit number.

Thanks for the input.  I searched for the ~ar files as hidden files and
there they are in the MS User Folder!  And, I could open them....

Now the question remains as to why after, an XL crash, isn't the ~ar
file opened  automatically when I restart XL?  Any ideas?

Not sure, since AR works as expected here. How are you restarting?

You could try repairing disk permissions.

You asked: "How are you restarting?"

I think that after XL crashes I restart by double clicking on the
spreadsheet I was using before the crash.  Should I just re-open the XL
application instead?

I will repair disk permissions just in case.

Is there any way to force an XL crash to test an idea?

What happens when you try?

Always a good idea.

Sure. Force-quit XL (CMD-OPT-Escape). Make sure that you first (a) make
a change to the workbook (AutoRecover's timing doesn't start until a
change is made), and (2) Wait at least the required AR timing per your
preferences (you should see a message in the status bar saying that
AutoRecover is saving the file).

First, I want to thank you for all your help.  It has been very
valuable to me.

I tried all of your suggestions and here are the results:

The Word AutoRecover works fine.  For a changed document, a visible
AutoRecovery file appears in the Microsoft User Data folder.  After a
forced quit, it is recovered when I open Word or when I open the
original file.  After the recovered file is closed, the AR file
disappears.

Excel AutoRecover does not work.  For a changed workbook, an invisible
~ar file appears in the MUD folder.  I can see it when I use "Find" to
search for invisible ~ar files; and I can open it when I click on it in
the Find display window.   After a forced quit, it is not recovered
when I open XL or when I open the original file.  AND.... THE  ~ar FILE
IS STILL IN THE MUD FOLDER, AND I CAN STILL MANUALLY OPEN IT VIA THE
"FIND" WINDOW!

So, I do have a manual approach to AutoRecover!

But, why is there no automatic recovery in XL as in Word?  The file is
there but somehow it is not linked to the recover function after a
crash as it is in Word.  Could it be connected to the fact that the
Word file is visible whereas the XL file is invisible?  (That is the
only difference VISIBLE to me!)

I don't think so, since AutoRecover works fine for me in XL.

OTOH, I'm not sure why, if the file's being created, you're not seeing
AR, unless something, like an add-in perhaps, is interfering with the
loading of the AR file (I'd have to check the order of opening).

How do I check the order of opening?
