More and more incoming emails seem to be arriving recently with multiple
blank lines -- from 3 up to 5 or more blank lines -- between each
paragraph, sometimes even more between end of message and sender's name.
(Seems to have some correlation with being in small type face.)

Is this a default setting in some new mailer that's recently come into
use?  Or something in my own client?  (Mac OS 9.2, Eudora Pro 4.2)

I think it's a problem with some HTML messages coming from OE.

Yes.

Your sender(s) are sending badly formatted HTML mail. As Sander
Tekelenburg suggested to you several days ago: "Have the sender stop
sending 'HTML' email. Have the recipient ignore the
'HTML' aspects of 'HTML' email (in Eudora's prefs->Styled text->"When
receiving styled maiol, pay attention to" - I keep everything
unchecked.)"
