Eudora 6.1 Light, OS 10.2.6

In Settings->Composing Mail I have ticked 'expand nicknames
immediately'.

It works fine from Message->Send new message to... Selected nicknames
are expanded in the To: line as they should be.

But if I open the address book and double click a name, only the
nickname appears. No expansion. This happens even if it's a name on the
recipients list that gets expanded via the 'Send new message to' route.

Is this how it's supposed to work? It feels wrong.

It *does* work here (just tried it). I have both check-boxes ticked:
"expand nicknames immediately" & "auto-complete nicknames"

but I guess that's exactly how your's is set up, too.

However I use the paid version of 6.1 although I don't see any reason
why such feature should have been crippled.

Yup. 'Autocomplete nicknames' is greyed out but still ticked- it must be
a default. If I type in the nickname and do a return, it autocompletes.
However if I insert the *same* nickname by double clicking in the
address book, and do a return, it does *not* autocomplete.

Go figure...

I must say that this is really not a worrying issue; on sending the
mail, addresses are fetched from nicknames with absolute reliability.
I'm just curious.

I'm sure it hasn't. I think that the next thing should be to restart the
Mac- even in OS10 it's remarkable how many tiny glitches are solved by a
restart. I shall try that later... When I'm feeling less bloody lazy...

Another thing that sometimes helps with the tiny glitches is running the
cron jobs.  I have Macaroni installed, so it does the housekeeping the
next time I turn on/wake up my TiBook after a job becomes due, but it
seems to sometimes help to run them early using MacJanitor.  It may have
to do with the way I've been using the TiBook, maybe I somehow mess up
permissions or something.

I guess I should get and run MacJanitor- although I do repair
permissions from time to time. But not very often, I do confess.

Actually, the real reason is that the litle glitches are so few and far
between...
