Replying to email using the same address it was sent to

I've got Eudora on another computer and Outlook Express on this one.

I'd like to find out how to accomplish the following on both programs. I
would appreciate anyone pointing me in the right direction with this.

I have tried every possible combination of settings in the Tools>Account
menu and still can't make the dang program reply to an email and have the
"from" field automatically show the "to" address where the sender sent the
mail.

I have noticed one thing though that might shed some light on this
nonsense...

If I look in the Tools>Account>Mail tab.... there are 3 email addresses
listed there -- all in alphabetical order top to bottom. For the purpose of
discussion they are aafred@verizon.com, bbfred@verizon.com and
ccfred@verizon.com. The address ccfred@verizon.com is marked "default."

Now, going back to the inbox, there is an email there that was sent to me at
ccfred@verizon.com. I open it, click on "reply" and there in the "from"
field is aafred@verizon.com. I close that one and open an email that was
sent to my address bbfred@verizon.com. Again, when I click reply, the email
address aafred@verizon.com appears in the "from" field. This is what always
happens when I reply, whether the email was sent to me at
aafred@verizon.com, bbfred@verizon.com or ccfred@verizon.com.

Now.... I go back to Tools>Accounts>Mail tab. There I delete the account
aafred@verizon.com. Now I create a new account called ddfred@verizon.com. I
leave ccfred@verizon.com as the "default". Now there are 3 accounts
listed.... bbfred@verizon.com, ccfred@verizon.com and ddfred@verizon.com.
The address ccfred@verizon.com is still listed as "default."

Now I go back to the inbox and open the same emails as before. Then click on
reply. Now the email address that appears in the "from" field is
bbfred@verizon.com.

From this exercise, it looks to me like OE always picks the top email
address in the list under Tools>Accounts>Mail.

The question is.... how can I disable this feature and cause the email
program to put the "sent to" address as the "reply" address when I am
replying to email?

Why did you only discuss the OE example, in an email that you
only sent to Eudora newsgroups?

For Eudora, the majority, for some value of majority between 51%
and 90%, of the time a reply to an email will default to using
the email address it was sent to as the "From" address.

IME, those times it doesn't, and defaults to using the Dominant
personality's email address, are mainly when the incoming email
a) had multiple addresses in the "To:" field, and mine wasn't
anywhere near the first, b) was received as a "CC:", or c) was
received as a "BCC:"

And sometimes it just decides to be contrary and use my Dominant
personality.

IOW, it's a bug that Qualcomm has never fixed.

No matter what email client I have used, since I first got a
second email address/account, I have *always* checked the from
address on any reply I make.  And have been doing it for so long
now that it is more solidly set in my engrams than touch typing
is, and I've been doing that for forty-mumble years.  I would
recommend you adopt the practice.  Even if Qualcomm ever fixes
the bug, the old Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared", and the old
axiom, "S[tuff] Happens" apply.  If you always check and select
your "From" address when you reply to an email, your reply will
never go out with the wrong "From" address, no matter how much
Qualcomm and MS screw with your mind.

Sounds like this is a common problem with both OE and Eudora.

Can anyone else recommend a work-around solution?  Or, better yet, suggest
an alternate email program where I don't have to check the "from" field
every time I reply to an email?

I mostly have been using OE -- just learning Eudora.   OE is a REAL PAIN and
I'm hoping that Eudora will be more user-friendly than OE.

In Eudora (at least Eudora 5.1 for Windows), if you want replies
to emails sent to "JoeBlow@blah.com" to be from that same address,
create the following filter:
---------------------------------------
• If Header> To:
• Contains> JoeBlow@blah.com

 ACTIONs:
• Make Personality> JoeBlow@blah.com
• Skip Rest
---------------------------------------

When you hit Reply in an email sent to JoeBlow@blah.com,
the From: address will automatically be JoeBlow@blah.com

Thanks very much!   And how simple that is, too!!!   Would that also include
incoming emails with "Joe...." in the cc: or bcc: fields?

They are both good groups. Make not be accessible to you.

comp.mail.eudora and comp.mail.eudora.mswindows
are bogus groups, and since you aren't using a Mac, there is probably no
reason to include comp.mail.eudora.mac either.

Please try to control your OE--it is top posting and failing to trim the
excess material that you aren't addressing.

I think it will be, but of course it will take time to get used to any
new program.
