Configuring Eudora for Comcast

I'm helping a friend configure for a new Comcast cable-modem setup.

1. What are the settings for using Eudora with Comcast? Are they
supporting POP, IMAP, or both? What is the smtp server? Authentication
on smtp? Mail server? Any tricks in entering the username? From reading
between the lines, I think the servers are:

  smtp.comcast.net
  mail.comcast.net

 2. Are there any big issues with Comcast these days? I just replied
to Bill who is having trouble sending mail to AOL. Any other issues?

Correct servers.  No IMAP, just POP3.  No tricks in the usernames.
Remember to check "Allow authorization".

The POP3 servers have never been fast.  My guess is that they have
millions of users that have set their clients to check mail every
minute, to satisfy their instant gratification cravings.

Expect authorization and other errors often.  The servers are not well
run, so they do a lot of downtime.  Over the past week, my Eudora log
shows over 20 auth failures and dozens of "postoffice unavailable" type
messages.  Of course, many of the errors cause Eudora to throw out the
saved passwords...

About the only good thing to be said about Comcast's email systems is
that they don't seem to have lost emails en-mass recently.  IOW, Comcast
email is good for receiving low-priority mailing list stuff, but not
critical emails.  Even Hotmail is more reliable.

As for AOL-type issues... Comcast does little to nothing about virus
infected zombie PCs on their network.  This means that the only way for
companies like AOL to deal with the spam flood is to block entire
subnets...

This is Bill, the orginator of this thread. I don't understand it, but
all of a sudden the problem with AOL disappeared.  Even before that
though, I was able to send to the same AOL addresses using either Yahoo
Mail or Apples Mail program (Mail 1 with OS X 10.1.5), which to me
points to some hangup within Eudora.  I don't think it could be a
setting problem, since these were all AOL addresses that I have had in
my Eudora address book for over a year, sending to them weekly with no
problem.  I have not changed any settings, nor have the AOL recipients.
basic Eudora settings are   smtp.comcast.net  and mail.comcast.net

The really strange thing is that no sooner did the AOL problem go away
than I started having problems sending to a few of the comcast.net
addresses I have also had in the same address book, but again, only with
Eudora-Apple Mail and Yahoo Mail worked fine.  If this keeps up I think
I'll just have to give up on Eudora.  It's making me crazy, and not
being able to ask support a question, even by email, stinks.
