What is Eudora up to with importing?

Andy Hewitt - 25 Feb 2004 19:25 GMT I saw the latest Beta update, and the note that says 'read HTML mail right within Eudora'. So I decided to download it (yet again). But no, they still haven't got this sorted.
Anyway, I might be able to live with this if I could import my messages from Mail. It picks up all the accounts nicely, and imports all my sent messages, and those residing in any of the account mail boxes. It does not pick up the filed messages in MyMac though! Any ideas?
(I have tried exporting from Mail using Mail Scripts, but I keep getting a filename already existing error).
TIA

Sorry, but I don't understand what you're saying. What are the filed messages in MyMac? What is MyMac? What is the difference between a "filed" message and some other message?
Since you can't see my face or body language, if it sounds like I'm being flippant, I'm not--I honestly don't know what those are, so of course I don't yet have any ideas what the problem is.

Sorry, I was assuming a knowledge of Mail.app as well. My fault.
In Mail, you have a layout very similar to Mozilla, where you have a set of In, Out, Sent, Draft etc. mailboxes for each account as they are created.
You can then have a completely seperate folder system for filing messages, should you so wish. These are stored in a folder called MyMac Local Folders in Mozilla), as they aren't related to an account.
Eudora's Import function for Mail is picking up all the mail boxes attached to an account, but not my filed messages in MyMac.
In the end I did work around it, by selecting messages and exporting from mail, and then importing into Eudora as a plain mbox.
My next problem is seperating the attachments.
Cheers.

Appreciated, although I have found the occasional message this won't work with. And it wasn't my point, it doesn't do what the advert says - IYSWIM?

It doesn't.

Thanks for the explanations of IYSWIM. Have a nice day.

Ah, I see. cross purposes. Yes, I've have been a user of Eudora for a long time - certainly back to V3.1.3 Lite, and since they started on the Sponsored mode too. I knew about the Open in Browser feature, but I've always found this rather too much fuss. I want my mail client to be more transparent.
Besides that, marketing hype has always annoyed me when they get it wrong - I actually got 100% in a study I did at college on advertising standards.
As it is I have been happy with Mail.app for some time now, although it does have its quirks, it works very well now. However, whenever a new release of Eudora appears I always give it a try, I don't mind the interface at all, that doesn't bother me.
There are a few things that do though, like not being able to display the messages I recieve (out of choice) in the way they were meant to be seen. It also cannot import messages with an attachment properly either. The standard for an mbox is to keep the attachment with the message. Eudora isn't standard by seperating them. This has also caused me grief in importing my mail database into Eudora.
Personally I think Eudora does need some more facelifting to make it more main stream. Certainly the ablity to handle tables in HTML messages would be a great help. Better importing is really a must if they expect people to migrate from other clients. I mean, they still import from Claris Emailer 2. Mail.app has only just been added, and that doesn't really do the job.
It's a bit of a rant I know, but Eudora really isn't quite the full toolbox we need if they want to attract new punters.

It is also possible to let Eudora decode MIME, QP and attachments from sendmail-like-files on your local HD (ftpd from the POP spool or unix mail-directory, for example). To do that, you can suck the mail into Eudora as if the mbox file is a POP spool. Just set your POP account in Eudora's settings to: "!volume:directory:directory:filename" (replacing names appropriately according to your HD's and its directories names) and Eudora will receive the mail as if it came from a POP server (note that the input-file's linebreaks must be in mac format and that its contents are deleted in the process so make a copy of it before you try).

Despite all the faults I find with Eudora, I somehow still trust it more with my messages.
