slow response on mail check

I just upgraded from 5.2.1 to 6.0.2.  When checking for new mail, Eudora
now takes 20-30 seconds before displaying a dialog box indicating that
new mail has arrived or that there is no new mail.  With 5.2.1 this box
appeared immediately.  Not a big deal but a tad annoying.  Any thoughts
as to why?  Sorry if this has been covered previously.

I have the same problem. However, if I display the task progress window
I get a direct response when I look for new mail and I get a report that
there is none to be had. I'm using 6.0.2 and os 9.1.

When you do receive mail, some of the delay may be in testing it against
the junk filters.

But, surely, this testing against junk filters is performed even if the
task progress window is open, is it not?

Well, first, let me apologize for not knowing about the Task Progress
Window.  Don't recall this in 5.x but my memory isn't the best.  Anyway,
I don't think the slow response has to do with filtering, because even
when no new mail is received, it still takes a while for a response,
although it now seems that the time is cut somewhat by having the TP
window open.

Thanks for everyone's input.

If you have virus checking software running, this can cause a
significant delay. If I have Norton running, Eudora takes forever to
display the dialogue box. I don't check incoming mail for viruses but
instead only download 40k of each message - virus suspects are obvious.

I don't have virus checking software running in the background (I do as
you do with the limited download).  But now I see that when the Task
Progress Window is front-most, the message dialog appears quickly, as
does any new mail; when Task Progress is not front-most, it takes 30
seconds before new mail appears in a mailbox or before a No New Mail
message appears.  I suppose that make sense but I rarely have the Task
Progress Window front-most.

Thanks,
Howard

Check your threading preferences in the Settings.  (I think it may be
one of the panels that requires you have the Esoteric Settings
installed/activated.)  One of the settings in the pane is "Wait time
before delivering."  I'm not sure what the purpose is, but I think it
pauses that long before making the mail available.

Ah Ha!  Yes, found it.  It was set for 10 seconds (which seems like 30
seconds when your waiting on a computer to do something!).

Many thanks,
Howard
